A mod for Project Zomboid added a living world with NPC factions in the spirit of STALKER
A new Project Zomboid mod called Project A-Life has arrived, populating the map with survivor factions that act independently of the player. Fully realized human NPCs have remained the community biggest unfulfilled wish since The Indie Stone abandoned its early implementation of the system back in April 2013.
Over the years, the community has made several attempts to fill that gap, and this newcomer stakes a claim as the most ambitious one yet.
The name is a nod to the A-Life system created by GSC Game World for the Stalker series. Its core idea is that character and faction behavior gets calculated by algorithms constantly, whether the player happens to be nearby or not.
The mod brings that same principle to Knox County – survivors keep chasing their own goals even when they are completely out of sight.
Project A-Life runs on the current build 42 and offers 105 sandbox options for fine-tuning NPC behavior. Characters explore the area, search buildings for supplies, patrol territories, and raid bases. Reactions during encounters depend on faction standing and disposition toward the player, and outcomes can differ wildly.
Possible encounter scenarios include:
a warning to stay off someone else's territory
an attempt to rob and strip gear
opening fire without any warning at all
Every faction runs on its own agenda, and squads operate as coordinated units. They can breach buildings, lay down suppressing fire, send medics to wounded allies, and post a sniper for cover. If fighters decide they have lost the advantage, they will pull back and regroup.
NPCs remember past clashes too. Wipe out half a squad, and the survivors might track the player down days later looking for revenge.
While the player is away, groups travel between towns going about their own business. Factions fight each other, leaving behind abandoned battlefields littered with loot, set up roadblocks, stage ambushes, and occupy buildings.
Stumbling on an enemy outpost gives players a choice – cut the comms and quietly slip away with some supplies, or call for backup over the radio themselves and see who answers.
The mod also includes tools for building custom NPCs and factions that can be shared with friends and other players through a simple code. It is available now on the Steam Workshop.
This counts as an early release, so the creators recommend backing up your save before installing it. That said, the mod can be added to an existing playthrough without issues and safely removed later, since it does not add any custom items of its own.
We are releasing bug fixes and shaping this mod with you.
The team invites anyone interested to join its Discord server, where it collects bug reports and suggestions.
