Fallout 4 gets a new city with voiced NPCs and more than 600 lines of dialogue

A group of veteran Fallout 4 modders has added a whole new town to the Wasteland. Called Detour, the settlement is designed as a new quest hub where players can trade, rest up, and pick up jobs while roaming post-apocalyptic Boston. The creators plan to expand the town with new content over time.

Detour sits on one of the ruined freeways that loom over parts of the Wasteland. The modders drew inspiration from Arefu in Fallout 3 and Highway Town from the Burning Springs update for Fallout 76. The town is not far from the starting location, Sanctuary Hills, near the Bedford Station map marker, so it's easy to visit early in a playthrough.

Detour is home to voiced characters who run shops, rent out rooms, and keep the peace. Among the residents are:

  • a ghoul sheriff whose digs hint at work for bounty hunters

  • a mayor who could easily offer a quest or two

  • a thief named Randy, who has a job for the player if he's sprung from his cell

There's also a house for sale, so players can settle in permanently if they feel like it. In total, Detour has more than a dozen voiced characters and over 600 lines of dialogue.

Primary creator Pig laid out plans for the future in a post on Nexus Mods.

This is kind of intended to also be a platform that I add to over time, like a new quest hub.

The team has plenty of experience building detailed quests for Fallout 4 under the Commonwealth Story Expansion Project banner. Their earlier mods covered deadly cults, underground wars, post-apocalyptic detective work, and Brotherhood of Steel drama.

To install Detour, you'll need the Nuka World DLC. An optional patch is also available for compatibility with the Reputation mod, which adds a faction relationship system in the style of Fallout: New Vegas.
