Assassin's Creed Odyssey became the highest-rated game in the series on Steam thanks to Christopher Nolan's new film

Turns out the best advertising a game could ask for showed up in movie theaters. After the premiere of Christopher Nolan's new blockbuster "The Odyssey," Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the eleventh mainline entry in the series, has climbed to the top of the rankings for the franchise on Steam.

At the time of writing, the game has an 89% positive review rating. That puts it ahead of the series previous leader, Assassin's Creed II, which sits at 86% based on overall user reviews.

Renaissance Italy didn't make the list of this year biggest films, but Homer Odyssey, which inspired Nolan new movie, turns out to share plenty of common ground with the setting of the Ubisoft game.

Nolan approached the material with his trademark scale: the film features a giant animatronic cyclops, a solid dose of body horror, the Trojan Horse, Scylla and Charybdis, and plenty of twists pulled straight from the classic poem. The picture has become one of the biggest hits of the director career, bringing in over $1.446 billion at the global box office.

The film success has sparked a fresh wave of interest in Assassin's Creed Odyssey. The logic checks out: audiences leave theaters captivated by ancient Greece and go looking for something similar, only to find Ubisoft already built a massive open-world game set in exactly that world.

Another game is currently riding a similar wave.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is seeing a comparable boost thanks to "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which has become the fifth highest-grossing film in history.
