Why The Witcher 3 Remaster is worth playing on the highest difficulty

Many players default to the standard difficulty so they can enjoy the story in peace. In RPGs with a well-designed combat system, that habit often backfires: half the mechanics stay an unread chapter. Geralt, armed with a full arsenal of witcher tricks, risks turning into an ordinary guy with a sword who mashes attack on everything that moves.

Ahead of The Witcher 3 Remastered, players are talking about the game difficulty again and advising newcomers to pick Death March right away. According to some, it is the best way to play The Witcher 3:

It forces you to learn and master oils, bombs, potions, and signs instead of relying on attack spam.

There is a very specific set of mechanics behind that advice. On the highest difficulty, enemies hit harder and take more punishment. Meditation no longer restores health, and food heals more slowly, so every hit from a drowner or ghoul visibly eats into supplies. Blind dodge rolls and strings of quick attacks end at a loading screen pretty fast.

That is also where the craft CD Projekt RED built the witcher profession around comes alive. Before a hunt, players have to read the bestiary, coat the blade in oil for the right type of monster, and pick potions. Yrden is needed against spectres, Igni comes in handy against corpse-eaters, and Quen goes from a decorative option to a lifeline. Preparation becomes part of the fight itself rather than a formality that can be skipped.

The perfect difficulty for everyone, because playing any other way is just boring.

Death March does have a known imbalance, though. The opening in White Orchard feels like a harsh test, and the first griffin easily teaches a lesson in humility. Closer to the end, a leveled-up Geralt with a polished build gets so strong that the challenge fades noticeably. Many players use mods or set their own restrictions, but even without them, the first dozens of hours on high difficulty are far more memorable.

On easy, Geralt just swings a sword, while on Death March he finally starts working as a witcher.

The Witcher 3 remaster launches tomorrow. Owners of the game will get a free upgrade.
