Japanese modder launched DLSS 5 together with ENB in Fallout 4 – the game now looks like a photograph

A Japanese player going by ピピ (pipi_rossa) got DLSS 5 and the ENB graphics mod running together in Fallout 4. The two have historically clashed since both hook into frame post-processing. Turns out the fix was simpler than anyone expected.

According to the modder, all it takes is switching to DLAA mode inside the Upscaling mod. DLAA works as anti-aliasing without any resolution scaling, meaning the frame renders at native resolution while the neural network only smooths out jagged edges. That specific mode is what let ENB and DLSS 5 coexist in the same frame.

Getting there wasn't easy. The player said the image flickered until he installed a fresh build of RenoDX pulled from the project Discord community. RenoDX intercepts graphics API calls and bolts on HDR processing for games that don't support it natively.

The visual payoff comes at a cost. The player noted that the combo puts heavy strain on the system, and he's not sure it's worth leaving on all the time. DLAA is inherently more demanding than standard DLSS since there's no performance gain from rendering at a lower resolution.

The screenshots drew skepticism from viewers who doubted the claimed 120 fps at those settings. In response, ピピ recorded gameplay footage, though the frame counter didn't make it into the capture. He said the frame rate held steady at 120 the whole time, thanks to a custom build of the Upscaling Custom mod made for him by the community.

The published shots show Preston Garvey and Sturges from the Sanctuary Hills settlement. The player pointed out that the characters look strikingly realistic even without any face texture replacement mods installed. Other screenshots capture the abandoned gas station near Sanctuary, the ruined streets of Boston, and a deathclaw tearing into raiders in Concord.

Not everyone was impressed with the result. One commenter wrote that the image looks AI-generated, adding that technically, it kind of is. Another user claimed that in their experience DLSS 5 fully replaces ENB on its own, and that a weather mod is all it takes to fix the contrast and clear up most lighting issues.
