Web comic about a Little Mermaid made of trash will get an animated pilot in 2027
The Little Trashmaid, a webtoon about a mermaid who grows up surrounded by plastic waste and toxic runoff, is getting its own animated adaptation. Stephanie "s0s2" Hermes, the creator behind the comic, announced the successful completion of a crowdfunding campaign on BackerKit.
The team managed to raise more than 204,000 euros to produce a pilot episode. The animated episode is planned for 2027, though no exact release date has been set.
The Little Trashmaid follows a 12-year-old mermaid named Tidy who lives in a polluted ocean. She has no idea that the world around her is poisoned by human waste, and she gathers plastic trash with genuine delight, mistaking it for exotic jewelry and outfits.
Her naivety drives both the humor and the dark irony of the comic, which reimagines the classic mermaid fairy tale through an environmental lens.
The webtoon built a sizable following thanks to the contrast between its bright, cartoonish art and the heavy subject of ocean pollution.
It is still unclear which studio will handle the actual animation for the pilot or what visual style the adaptation will take. Hermes promised to share more production details as 2027 gets closer.
