GTA 6 won't allow us to buy a house in story mode
Buying property in the GTA 6 single-player campaign won't be an option, and Rockstar Games has story reasons for that. Jason and Lucia are on the run, so putting down roots with a house purchase doesn't really fit their situation. The information comes from a blogger who attended a closed showcase at the studio, and there's no official confirmation from the developer yet.
On paper, this doesn't look like a step back from the previous game. In GTA 5 story mode, safehouses unlocked for free as players progressed, while buying apartments and houses only worked in GTA Online. The last time players could fully purchase homes and income-generating properties in a campaign was back in GTA Vice City and San Andreas.
So far, only two places where the characters live have been officially shown. The Starlet Motel in Port Gellhorn appeared in the first trailer during a dialogue scene about trust, while the green house on the coast belongs to drug courier Brian Heder, who lets Jason stay there rent-free in exchange for collecting money from debtors. In the second trailer, Jason fixes the roof of this house, hinting at some kind of home maintenance mechanic.
Here's what's known about housing in the game so far:
safehouses handle the usual functions, including saving progress, changing outfits, and storing vehicles
the fence system for selling stolen goods needs to be unlocked separately, suggesting a progression of locations across the map
Pay and Spray body shops open up gradually as the story advances
leaked info suggests players can enter roughly 40 percent of buildings, though this number remains unconfirmed
There's still no clarity on garages and safehouses overall. The same blogger held off on covering that topic, along with the heist system and physics, saving it for a separate video. Rockstar didn't go into detail on these mechanics during the 26-minute GTA 6: An Extended Look presentation.
GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series. Rockstar hasn't announced a PC version.
