Resident Evil Requiem sets all-time Metacritic user review record, highest in the series by far

The 2026 Game of the Year race is already heating up. Mewgenics set an early high bar with an 88 on Metacritic, and just two weeks later, Resident Evil Requiem matched that score – becoming the best-reviewed new entry in the series in over 20 years.

Critics had their say before launch, but the game has now been in players' hands for a few days, and the verdict from the public is coming in loud and clear. As of Monday, February 2, with more than 2,250 reviews submitted, Resident Evil Requiem holds the highest user review score in Metacritic history.

An 88 from critics is no small achievement – no new Resident Evil game has hit that mark since Resident Evil 4 back in 2005.

On Steam, the game sits at Overwhelmingly Positive with nearly 20,000 reviews. On Metacritic, Resident Evil Requiem carries a 9.5/10 user score – the best of any game in the series.

Before this, Resident Evil 4 held the top spot, with the 2005 original at 9.1 and the 2023 remake at 8.9. The 2002 remake of the first game also scored an 8.9, while the Resident Evil 2 remake and the 1998 original both landed at 8.8.

Full Metacritic user review scores for the series:

  • Resident Evil Requiem – 9.5

  • Resident Evil 4 (2005) – 9.1

  • Resident Evil 4 (2023) – 8.9

  • Resident Evil Remake (2002) – 8.9

  • Resident Evil 2 (2019) – 8.8

  • Resident Evil (1998) – 8.8

  • Resident Evil (1996) – 8.7

  • Resident Evil 2 (1999) – 8.7

  • Resident Evil Village – 8.4

  • Resident Evil Code: Veronica – 8.3

  • Resident Evil 7 Biohazard – 8.2

  • Resident Evil: Revelations – 8.1

  • Resident Evil 0 – 7.9

  • Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – 7.6

  • Resident Evil 5 – 7.2

  • Resident Evil 3 (2020) – 6.7

  • Resident Evil 6 – 5.4

That 9.5 isn't just a series record – it's the highest user score ever recorded on the platform. Last year, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 knocked Metal Gear Solid and The Witcher 3 off the top spot with a 9.5 of its own. Now Resident Evil Requiem sits just a fraction above it, claiming the number one position.

The score could shift as more players work through the game and leave their ratings. But for now, Capcom has every reason to celebrate – especially given that Resident Evil Requiem is already among the most-played single-player games in Steam history.
