A24 Elden Ring adaptation will cost almost $200 million

Alex Garland's adaptation of the FromSoftware and George R.R. Martin game is now the most expensive movie in A24 history. According to the Wall Street Journal, the budget sits at "nearly $200 million," and the gap between it and the studio's other films is huge.

Over its 14 years, A24 has built a reputation as an arthouse studio that turns out memorable films on modest budgets. With this figure, Elden Ring puts the studio on par with Marvel blockbusters. Variety reported that Spider-Man: No Way Home cost $200 million, while The Hollywood Reporter pegged Jurassic World Rebirth at $180 million.

The previous record holder was 2025 Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet. Josh Safdie's drama was billed as the studio's most expensive film even before release, with a $70 million budget according to Deadline. The Elden Ring adaptation costs almost three times as much.

Garland held the earlier records too. His Civil War reportedly cost around $50 million, and The Smashing Machine with Dwayne Johnson was said to have a similar budget. No A24 film has come close to the current figure, and Elden Ring is also the studio's first big swing at a video game adaptation.

Little is known about the movie so far, which makes it hard to pin down why the budget is so high. Earlier this year, A24 announced the cast, including Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, and Havana Rose Liu.

The Elden Ring movie was announced in May 2025 and is scheduled to premiere on March 3, 2028.
