Modder added full-fledged portals to Skyrim, but everyone is arguing about Claude
Portals like the ones in Valve Portal have arrived in Skyrim, except here they come from a spell instead of a portal gun. A new mod for Special Edition adds a pair of magical gateways that let you see straight through to the other side.
Stepping through happens with no loading screen and no jarring cut, and the mod description calls the transition "seamless."
The spells belong to the Alteration school. For now, they're granted as soon as a save loads, but the mod author promised to move them into spell tomes sold by merchants, likely at the Adept level.
Placement range is limited, though there's enough reach for tricks like opening a portal from the Throat of the World to somewhere near Whiterun. Physics works as expected too, so a piece of cheese dropped into a portal on the floor will fall out the other side.
The excitement quickly turned into an argument once it came out that the code was written with help from Anthropic Claude. Critics have two complaints. The first is the "I made" phrasing, since the AI use is only mentioned on the mod page. The second is the broader trend: over the past year, Nexus Mods has seen modders who post a dozen mods a week, and the trending pages for Skyrim have filled up with half-baked releases.
Defenders countered that clunky mods existed long before neural networks, and that AI assistants are already used in large-scale game development. The most practical argument is that an AI doesn't guarantee stability or ongoing support on its own.
