Impressions after 30 minutes in the early alpha of State of Decay 3
The change of ownership at Undead Labs amid the Xbox reset left plenty of questions about the fate of the zombie survival game the studio has been working on for years. Gamescom 2026 featured a closed demonstration of State of Decay 3 with hands-on time available, and the half-hour session with the early alpha build left a fairly promising impression.
The game feels like a proper sequel built for the current console generation, rather than an expanded version of the second entry.
The foundation stays the same – community management and base-building – but both systems got a notable expansion. Facilities and buildings no longer follow a single linear upgrade path, instead specializing in specific functions through branching upgrades.
Just as important is who gets assigned to which facility, since survivors with fitting traits and perks, like a medical skill, speed up recovery for the rest of the community.
With more than thirty characters under your control, keeping track of these traits turns into an interesting puzzle. You have to decide who goes out to fight zombies in the field and who stays back at base for production and healing bonuses. It's too early to tell from a short demo how deep these connections run over the long haul, but the system reads clearly in the moment.
Fighting hordes works differently than before. The large open world is made up of towns, points of interest, and other locations, and the map shows infestation networks spreading across the region and branching into neighboring settlements. Infested settlements and plague nests act as hotspots that need clearing out to stop the spread.
Each of these locations hides a heart of the infestation – sometimes under a building, sometimes in an auto shop garage, and occasionally in fairly intricate underground sections resembling a small dungeon. Regardless of location, the formula stays the same: find the four weak points scattered around the area, then reach the heart itself. All the while, you're fending off zombies, and cracking open the heart triggers an even bigger wave.
The end of a clear-out turns into total chaos as the last bullets go into the heart while bloaters and juggernauts back up the wave. But once the source is destroyed, the remaining infected die off on their own. It's a simple formula, but it works thanks to gunplay that feels far more responsive and satisfying than in previous entries in the series.
That's clear with the AK-47 and its drum mag, great for mowing down crowds, and with the suppressed pistol for quiet headshots. Beyond straightforward shootouts, there's room for more creative approaches, like luring a group of infected into a spilled fuel puddle and setting it on fire, or picking off enemies with stealth before the fight breaks out fully. Melee combat now includes a slide that knocks weaker zombies down, followed by a finisher, which livens up the usual bat-swinging.
All these playstyles get a boost when controlling a survivor with the right skills and traits. As a result, State of Decay 3 plays like a full-on third-person shooter, and it's a nice contrast to the management side that draws people to the series in the first place.
Judging by this early version, the game's main focus comes down to territorial control on the map – clearing out infestation hotspots and keeping them under control. Over time, infestations return, and sieges hit established settlements, so the background simulation keeps players on edge the whole time. Alongside that, there's food, water, and other resources to gather so the community doesn't fall apart.
The game includes drop-in, drop-out co-op with no limits on how far session participants can wander across the open world. Undead Labs also mentioned a dynamic difficulty system that keeps zombies from becoming too easy to handle, while easing up if a player keeps hitting a wall. Technically, the alpha build didn't run all that smoothly, which is expected at this stage of development.
Undead Labs will run closed playtests toward the end of 2026, with a full release planned for 2027 on PC via Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series.
