New The Witcher 3 mod automatically switches path tracing between 8 regions, interiors and combat
A new mod called Dynamic Region Graphics is out for The Witcher 3 Remastered, letting players decide exactly where path tracing kicks in and where lighter graphics settings are enough.
Path tracing support on PC is one of the biggest upgrades CD Projekt RED added to the remaster. The technology changes the image dramatically, but not every location in the third game benefits. Some places look worse under certain lighting conditions than they do with classic rendering.
Performance is the second problem. Path tracing, a full simulation of light behavior with multiple bounces, puts a massive load on the GPU. Leave it on all the time, and a trip across Velen, Skellige, and Toussaint turns into a fight against dropping frame rates.
Dynamic Region Graphics tackles this with a profile system. Each region, as well as indoor and outdoor areas, can get its own lighting mode and upscaler settings. Switching happens automatically as you move from one zone to another.
Mod features:
Per-region profiles – Choose default graphics, ray tracing, or path tracing for Vizima, White Orchard, Kaer Morhen, Novigrad, Velen, Skellige, Toussaint, and special worlds
Indoors and outdoors – Separate profiles can be set for interiors like taverns and castles and for open-world exploration
Dynamic upscaling – DLSS, FSR 2, or XeSS quality adjusts automatically when ray tracing or path tracing engages. For example, you can keep native DLAA outside and switch to "Quality" or "Auto" with path tracing
Disable during combat – Graphics instantly revert to baseline settings during fights for maximum smoothness and high FPS
In-game menu – All options are configured under "Options > Gameplay > Dynamic Region Graphics"
No Script Merger – The mod uses native REDengine annotations and does not overwrite the game's vanilla script files
18 languages – Fully translated into all official game languages
The lack of script conflicts makes installation easier. Mods for The Witcher 3 usually have to be combined through the Script Merger utility, otherwise they overwrite the same files and break each other.
The idea is close to dynamic resolution scaling, which many games use to keep frame rates stable. The difference is that this approach adjusts not just resolution but the whole set of demanding effects.
Ray tracing and path tracing remain so demanding that many players turn them off entirely for the sake of performance, and flexible profiles offer a middle ground.
- Songs of the Past were made possible thanks to the development of a remaster of the 11-year-old The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Geralt's chain was supposed to appear back in The Witcher 3, but it only became technically possible now
- Songs of the Past will conclude The Witcher 3's story, not pave the way to The Witcher 4
