Geralt's chain was supposed to appear back in The Witcher 3, but it only became technically possible now
The Witcher 3 is finally getting a weapon fans have wanted for over a decade – Geralt will get a chain. In Andrzej Sapkowski novels, the witcher occasionally uses a chain when fighting monsters.
It also shows up in the opening cinematic of the first Witcher game, where Geralt fights a striga, though the weapon never made it into the actual game. The chain stayed absent from both the second and third installments too.
According to Songs of the Past game director Jakub Rokosz, CD Projekt Red discussed adding the chain back during The Witcher 3 development, but technical limitations at the time made it impossible to pull off.
Back then it wasn't possible for various technological reasons and a bunch of complications.
He noted the team managed to solve those problems while working on the remaster, which finally let them bring the weapon to life.
The chain will mainly come in handy against new enemies. For instance, it lets Geralt hold back swarming Swarmions and yank them in close for follow-up attacks.
In one moment shown off by the developers, the chain can also break through enemy defenses and set up new finishers – including a pretty brutal decapitation.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past is set to launch in 2027.
