No Man's Sky player shows off a cozy island where the game generated a settlement and several points of interest

Procedural generation is basically an endless dice roll. Most of the time it lands on another barren rock with a few bushes and a lonely terminal somewhere past the horizon. Every so often, though, the dice fall as if a city planner were running the algorithm, and a lifeless universe suddenly looks lived in.

One No Man's Sky player just hit that jackpot. In the very first system they jumped to after arriving in galaxy 256, they found a planet with several points of interest packed onto a single island. There is a settlement, a Colossal Archive with a trading terminal, ships coming and going, and not one but two holo arena tables, along with other structures. The cherry on top is the system status: it is an outlaw system, meaning smugglers keep order there instead of the usual authorities.

Structures in No Man's Sky are normally spread across a planet over several kilometers, so players have to hop between them by ship. Here everything is within walking distance and fits into one geographic feature, which makes the spot look like a small town – the kind Hello Games never added to the game. The reaction was predictable:

Pack your things everyone, this person has won No Man's Sky

Someone immediately suggested going off to play Starfield, but was quickly talked out of such extremes. Recreating the find is not easy, either. Galaxy 256 is the last one in the game, and according to the discoverer, a regular jump through the galaxy center no longer leads there. Players can get there through multiplayer with someone already in the galaxy, through a base uploaded to the Space Anomaly, or, as one commenter happily pointed out, by editing a single number in the save file.

For anyone who does make it, there is a practical detail. A base boundary can be extended up to 1,000 units from the base computer in every direction, or 2,000 units across, which is enough to cover every structure on the island. The island is big enough for several neighbors, but there is no portal on it – that sits on the other side of the planet.

Hello Games has been feeding players updates for ten years without building a city, and a random algorithm put one together on its own, at the very edge of the universe.
