Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Werwulf trailer
Focus Features has dropped the second trailer for Werwulf – a grim horror flick from director Robert Eggers, known for The Lighthouse and Nosferatu. The film takes viewers to a remote English village in the 13th century, where terrifying events begin to unfold.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the lead role of a farmer infected with something resembling lycanthropy. The plot follows wolf hunters arriving in the isolated settlement after hearing about a ferocious beast terrorizing locals and attacking without warning. The confrontation with this creature drives the central conflict of the film.
Eggers has always paid close attention to historical setting and period detail, something evident throughout his previous work. Judging by the trailer, Werwulf keeps that tradition going – the grim look of the medieval village, the fog, and the superstitious villagers build an oppressive mood long before the monster even shows up.
The cast also includes Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson alongside Taylor-Johnson. All three previously worked with Eggers on Nosferatu.
Werwulf hits theaters in late December.
