The events of Avatar: Seven Havens will unfold in a post-apocalyptic world 225 years after The Legend of Korra

Avatar creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko shared new details about the upcoming animated series Avatar: Seven Havens. The idea for a follow-up to The Legend of Korra featuring an earthbending Avatar first came up back in early 2021.

The creators wanted to show a world that had survived a massive catastrophe, letting viewers piece together what happened and why everyone around them hates the Avatar. That concept became the foundation for the new story.

We started talking about which Avatar would fit best into this world. We landed on Pavi – a girl forced into hiding who's younger than both Aang and Korra.

We thought it'd be interesting to place this kind-hearted character into a world that's not only on the brink of collapse, but also populated by people who hate the Avatar.

Seven Havens takes place roughly 225 years after the end of The Legend of Korra. Viewers will meet Ellora, a massive city of a million people built within a system of narrow canyons. That location shields the city from the sandstorms and twisters that regularly batter the surrounding lands.

The creators borrowed the city name from the real Indian complex of cave monasteries and temples known as Ellora, where Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions have crossed paths for centuries. In the show, Ellora becomes a meeting point for every form of elemental bending, bringing people from different backgrounds together under one roof.

The city residents are united by an ideology of resilience, summed up in the motto "For the survival of Ellora." Writer Sekai Sethi explained why this mindset makes the main character situation especially dangerous.

Since survival comes above everything else for them, rumors that an Avatar – someone they see as a world destroyer – is hiding among them spark fear and panic. That raises the stakes in Pavi's story enormously: if her true identity gets exposed, the consequences could be disastrous.

Avatar: Seven Havens premieres on Paramount+ on October 9. The season will run 26 episodes, with three episodes releasing per week.
