Onimusha: Way of the Sword shows amazing optimization, but the game's graphics don't impress
Journalists from DSOGaming keep testing new video games, and this time they turned their attention to Onimusha: Way of the Sword, publishing a full performance analysis. The test rig combined an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32GB of DDR5 RAM at 6000MHz, and a whole lineup of GPUs ranging from the AMD Radeon RX 6900XT up to the NVIDIA RTX 5090.
At 1080p with max settings, the RTX 5090 ran into a CPU bottleneck, yet the average framerate still came out above 220fps. Every GPU tested, including the aging RTX 2080Ti, managed to clear 60fps, with the 2080Ti averaging 78fps.
Moving to 1440p at max settings, the top five GPUs handled the game with no issues, holding steady above 60fps. The RTX 3080 also delivered a smooth experience, though only with a G-Sync display. The Radeon RX 6900XT averaged 68fps, though it dipped below 50fps at times.
At native 4K with max settings, only the RTX 4090, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090 stayed above 60fps. The Radeon RX 9070XT and RX 7900XTX can also deliver a smooth experience at this resolution, but only paired with a FreeSync monitor.
Despite the impressive optimization, the visuals in Onimusha: Way of the Sword didn't leave much of an impression. The game runs on RE Engine, but it clearly falls short of the visual quality seen in the latest Resident Evil titles. Overall the graphics look decent, but the shortcomings are easy to spot, and ray tracing barely makes a difference even in darker areas.
One thing worth pointing out is the complete absence of stutters, both in the demo and in the benchmark itself. That's especially welcome given that the game runs Denuvo, which often causes performance drops in other titles.
Overall, Onimusha: Way of the Sword shows excellent PC optimization and doesn't demand powerful hardware for a smooth experience. That said, the visuals aren't jaw-dropping, and the game skips more demanding tech like full path tracing, which could have pushed its visual quality further.
