Multiplayer in STALKER 2 is not cancelled – developers confirmed work on a free update

GSC Game World is still working on a free multiplayer update for STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Ievgen and Maria Grygorovych shared the update with Insider Gaming during a conversation at gamescom 2026.

The promise of multiplayer goes back to before the game even launched. The official STALKER 2 website still carries the line "Multiplayer mode is coming soon after the release date as a free update for the game."

Two years after release, that mode still hasn't shown up. GSC Game World says most of its resources went into polishing the base game and cranking out new single-player content instead.

That content includes Cost of Hope, the expansion that dropped earlier this month, plus a second major expansion currently in the works. With a schedule like that, multiplayer barely got any breathing room.

No concrete timeline was given, but the studio confirmed work on the mode continues while the team juggles several projects at once, some of which haven't even been announced yet.

The community's biggest question is how such a mode would even work. A big chunk of the PC crowd relies heavily on mods, and local modifications would basically kill any chance of connecting with other players without a separate solution from the developers.

GSC Game World hasn't shared details about the format either. It's unclear whether it'll be cooperative exploration of the Zone or competitive battles in the vein of the original trilogy multiplayer.
