STALKER 2 gets update 2.1 with increased draw distance and improved combat system
GSC Game World released update 2.1 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The patch expands the A-Life system, improves long-range firefights, and adds a new way to get around the Zone quickly. Developers also made many fixes and balance changes.
The headline addition is manual control over the render distance of NPCs managed by A-Life. The system handles the Zone's independent life: stalkers, factions, and mutants exist and interact regardless of what the player does. Players can now choose how far away these characters are displayed on any console and on PCs with any configuration.
The setting comes as a set of presets, selected under "Settings – Game – Rendering Options." The number of available presets depends on the console or PC configuration.
The developers recommend sticking with the default preset, since it delivers the most stable experience. Higher values may reduce performance or cause the game to run unstably. The "Dynamic" preset adapts the distance to the performance of a specific device.
There is one important caveat. A-Life NPCs and story characters work differently, so to keep the game stable, the increased distance mostly affects the former.
Firefights got attention too. GSC Game World reworked the internal mechanics and balance so that combat at long range feels more natural. With a suitable preset selected, the sounds of random skirmishes now carry from a much greater distance, and weapon ballistics were reworked to match the new settings.
The second addition is fast travel with squad leaders. Players can now strike a deal with friendly or neutral groups and travel with them to locations along their route. To do this, talk to the squad leader, who is now marked on the compass.
The service has its limits. It isn't cheap, and nobody will carry loot for the player, so it's worth checking that there's enough money and carry weight to spare. Travel is only possible to previously explored locations nearby, so a squad from Zalissya won't take you all the way to Pripyat.
Update 2.1 arrived with a hefty list of bug fixes. The developers built the patch around feedback from social media, forums, and reviews. They asked players to keep sharing their impressions and ideas, and thanked everyone who has stayed in the Zone all these years.
