Bethesda released update 1.45 for Fallout 4 – fortunately, it didn't break mods
Bethesda Game Studios has rolled out another patch for Fallout 4, appearing in the client as update 1.45.
The update arrived on August 18th and focuses on the Creations system. Don't expect new features here – this patch is mainly about stability and behind-the-scenes improvements to the mod platform.
Bethesda hasn't published official patch notes, sticking instead to a brief community notice that warned players to prepare ahead of the install.
Bethesda Game Studios:
On Tuesday, August 18th, a patch will be coming to Fallout 4 focusing on general Creations improvements. As a precaution, prior to these updates we encourage players to log into your game save if you haven't done so in a while or manually save your load order. Once your load order is saved, you'll be able to re-download your entire Creations list at once when the update is live.
The biggest practical addition in this patch is official support for external asset mods. That's a real win for mod authors, who were previously stuck working within the game internal resources.
Early player reports suggest the update didn't break existing mods. Given how past Fallout 4 patches have a habit of wrecking entire mod setups, that outcome feels more like luck than the standard.
This update builds on the May patch, when Bethesda finally expanded Creations storage across all platforms. Those changes played out differently on each console due to how their file systems work.
Xbox One saw its cap raised to 15 GB, while Xbox Series X|S storage became growable up to 100 GB. Installed Creations got wiped on first launch after the patch though, forcing players to redownload content by restoring a saved load order or loading a save made after the Anniversary Edition launch.
PS5 owners got roughly 15 GB for mods, and their installed Creations carried over with no extra steps needed. The situation on PS4 turned out messier due to the console architecture:
storage expanded to roughly 16 GB
download size may not match the actual space used on disk
storage usage may appear larger than expected when managing Creations
storage partitioning creates a practical limit on how many large Creations can be installed at once
Bethesda is also working on the franchise future elsewhere. Fallout 5 is officially in development, and remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas have been confirmed too.
