Palworld boss has already received dozens of letters from BioWare fans asking him to buy the Mass Effect franchise, but he is more interested in Jade Empire
EA is shutting down BioWare, as news broke this week. The legendary studio created many landmark RPGs, including the Mass Effect series, which had a new installment deep in development. Since the announcement, fans have been looking for ways to save the game, and one idea involves Palworld developer Pocketpair.
John 'Bucky' Buckley, head of communications and publishing at Pocketpair, posted on Twitter that this isn't the first time something like this has happened. According to him, after a game is canceled or a studio closes, fans typically flood the company with comments and emails saying "You should buy this IP!"
Then the mood shifts.
"Then, as months go by, those comments turn into 'Why didn't you buy it? You have the money!'"
Buckley explained that buying and selling IP is complicated, and the asking price is often far out of line with the actual value.
He also confirmed that fans have been reaching out about Mass Effect 5 specifically. Responding to a user's question, he said:
"I got close to 30 DMs/emails from fans about buying Mass Effect in the last day."
He joked that Jade Empire would make him more keen.
Whether EA would even be open to discussing a sale of the sci-fi franchise, and whether the price would make any sense, is unclear. Pocketpair itself appears to be doing well financially.
There's also the question of fit. Palworld and the spin-offs revealed so far are very different from the expansive role-playing games that built BioWare reputation, including the Dragon Age series. For the Mass Effect legacy, fans want a studio that will honor the work already done.
