Cat in a diving helmet becomes the main star of the Crimson Desert expansion
Sometimes a game is sold not by an open world with hundreds of hours of content or mountain-sized bosses, but by one ridiculous detail. Someone ignores a big release for months, then caves when a coworker sends a screenshot of a fat cat in a hat.
Now the cat has put on a diving helmet, and that may be enough to sell an expansion too.
Pearl Abyss opened pre-orders for the Charting the Unknown expansion for Crimson Desert, which launched in March 2026, and released a short teaser.
Underwater, a pet swims alongside the hero in a round copper helmet with portholes, and the rest of the video has literally taken a back seat.
The base game doesn't allow diving at all, so the underwater world will add a whole new dimension to Crimson Desert.
Players spotted quite a lot in just a few seconds of teaser:
underwater exploration where pets dive alongside the hero
a sunfish that looks rideable
a personal ship with customizable sail colors and hints of naval combat
a ghost ship that sinks beneath the waves in the final shot, in the best Flying Dutchman tradition
The pet system in Crimson Desert has long had a life of its own. The game features more than 40 base animal species with color variations, from cats, ducks, and wombats to hedgehogs with fruit on their backs.
Most of them scavenge for items, cats hang out on the hero's shoulder, wolves, bears, and tigers draw enemy aggro, and the Iron Eagle, Wyvern, and Phoenix attack with elemental powers. Pet accessories are sold in shops in the villages of Pororin and Demeniss, while harnesses for the wyvern and bear turn up at a leather shop in Hernand.
Skeptics genuinely don't get why a cat in a hat should influence a $70 purchase. The most convincing answer goes like this:
I think a lot of people, including me, just enjoy whimsy. Especially when it's juxtaposed next to something serious and badass like some of the gear and bosses you fight in this game.
Ghost ships, naval battles, and sunfish all look impressive, but the cat is still what sells the expansion.
