The events of Songs of the Past for The Witcher 3 take place after Blood and Wine, but you don't have to complete the expansion
CD Projekt RED revealed where the The Witcher 3 expansion Songs of the Past fits in the timeline and what players need to finish before starting it. The story takes place after the ending of The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, the last story expansion for the game.
Kuzia-Rokosz from CD Projekt RED explained that Geralt really did plan to retire, but could not turn down a request from his best friend.
So we continue with the story that Geralt really wanted to retire, but then he cannot because his best friend asks him for this one last favor to accompany him.
On the practical side, Songs of the Past can be started right after finishing Wild Hunt. Playing through Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine is not required.
From a practical side, people will be able to start Songs of the Past immediately after finishing the main story. So, you do not have to finish the expansions. And then we, of course, continue the story depending on whether the player has finished the second expansion or not. We carry that in the story, in dialogue, consequences, and so on.
The expansion is set to release in 2027. No exact date has been announced yet.
