First photos from The Hunt for Gollum shows the Shire and possibly Frodo

Warner Bros. released the first set photos from The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The reveal lines up with Hobbit Day, celebrated every year on September 22 in honor of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins birthdays from Tolkien lore.

The photos appear to show Frodo from behind, along with Andy Serkis, who takes on directing duties for the film in addition to acting.

The new movie brings Serkis back together with the team behind the original trilogies – Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo, while Lee Pace reprises his role as King Thranduil.

The story takes place between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, following Aragorn hunt for the ring-obsessed creature. Viggo Mortensen has passed the role of Aragorn to Jamie Dornan, though Serkis says Mortensen himself is "delighted" with the choice.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters on December 17, 2027.
