How powerful is Galadriel – analysis of the might of the elf who conquered Dol Guldur
Trying to measure the "power" of Tolkien characters like some kind of anime power scale almost always ends in failure, because Middle-earth runs on completely different rules.
Might here isn't about how much you can bench press. It comes down to spiritual stature, wisdom, lineage, and the ability to shape events. Still, the question of exactly where the Lady of Lothlorien ranks on that hierarchy keeps coming back around.
Tolkien himself answered this about as clearly as possible, calling Galadriel "the greatest of the Noldor, except Fëanor maybe, though she was wiser than he, and her wisdom increased with the long years."
Fëanor outclassed everyone in skill and knowledge from birth, but that "maybe" is what makes the comparison so striking. After three ages of trials, losses, and turning down the Ring itself, Galadriel grew to match – or possibly surpass – someone who started out as the greatest of them all.
Her standing gets backed up by both lineage and history. She belongs to the Calaquendi, elves who saw the light of the Two Trees, trained under the Maia Melian in Doriath, and by the Third Age was the last of the great Noldor left who hadn't died or sailed back to Valinor.
That alone made her the strongest elf east of the Sea. Círdan the Shipwright might have given her competition on age, since older typically means more powerful in Tolkien work, but he never saw Valinor and willingly gave up his Ring to Gandalf.
As for actual displays of her power, the clearest example comes during the War of the Ring. While the elves of Lothlorien held off the army from Dol Guldur, Galadriel herself tore the fortress apart. Tolkien doesn't leave any room for interpretation here:
Galadriel threw down its walls and laid bare its pits.
Comparisons always circle back to Glorfindel, who killed a balrog during the fall of Gondolin, died in the process, and was sent back to Middle-earth stronger than before. He's probably tougher than Galadriel in a straight fight, but Tolkien conversation about "power" was never really about who wins duels.
It makes more sense to think of these characters as something like half-Maiar: Gandalf is the wisest, Saruman the most knowledgeable, Elrond the best healer, Glorfindel the strongest fighter, and Galadriel holds the greatest gift of foresight – she was also one of the few beings Sauron genuinely feared.
One joke going around notes that three strands of her hair could reduce a dwarf to tears, and that Fëanor asked her for just one lock three separate times, getting turned down every single time.
