Phil Spencer showed up to GDC 2026 with the funniest name tags
The Game Developers Conference is underway for its 2026 edition, and former Xbox boss Phil Spencer has already become one of the highlights of the event – not for any big announcements, but for showing up with some very on-point name tags.
He's been taking photos with attendees and making the rounds with two badges that had people grinning. One reads "hello, my name is retired", and the other introduces him as the assistant to Asha Sharma – the new head of Microsoft Gaming. Both went over extremely well online.
Reactions from the community:
"He looks way happier than he did last month."
"Has he gotten younger? The assistant role suits him."
"Hope he'll be a big part of the 25th anniversary. He's earned it."
"Funny how literally everyone recognizes Phil by face, yet he still covered himself in name tags."
Spencer is staying on at Xbox through summer 2026 to help Sharma settle into her role as Microsoft Gaming CEO, so the "assistant" label isn't too far off. And the retirement joke tracks too – it's hard to imagine Phil quietly disappearing to work on indie games or joining a competitor anytime soon.
