A fan made an Expedition 33-themed deck mod for Balatro and the community loves it

A Reddit user known as Haykira has created a mod for the card game Balatro that replaces the default face cards with characters from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The mod has been met with enthusiasm from the JRPG community, as Expedition 33 has become one of the highest-rated games of all time.

The modification swaps out all Kings, Queens, and Jacks across every suit with heroes from Sandfall Interactive's RPG. Haykira put considerable work into adapting the characters to fit the visual style of Balatro, while preserving the card game's distinctive aesthetic.

The standout favorite among fans was the combined Clea and Simon card, which drew the most positive reactions in the comments. User TerryBogard85 even offered to buy a physical version of the deck, saying "Where can I buy these? I'll be your first customer."

Several users chimed in with suggestions for reshuffling the character-to-suit assignments – for instance, placing Monoco and Verso in the same suit, or swapping Verso and Gustave to group the 33-year-olds from Lumiere separately from those tied to Dessandre.

The mod is available for download on GameBanana in two versions: a standard one and a version adapted for the Steamodded mod loader. Installation involves replacing texture files in the game directory or using the mod loader. Haykira recommends backing up the game's executable before making any changes.

Balatro is a roguelike card game by LocalThunk that won numerous awards in 2024 – at one point, the Steam Deck was even jokingly referred to as "the Balatro console."

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.
