Red Dead Redemption 2 mod adds Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system and wars between 8 gangs
Modder nicklovin99 has released enRage, a mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 that brings the Nemesis system idea to the Rockstar Games western. The mod is available for download on Nexus Mods.
The mechanic first appeared in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor from Monolith Productions in 2014, then evolved in Middle-earth: Shadow of War. In those games, orcs remembered their encounters with the hero, picked up scars, climbed the ranks of Sauron's army, and came back hungry for revenge. Warner Bros. patented the system, which kept other studios from using it directly, and Monolith itself shut down in early 2025.
enRage recreates a similar idea in a Wild West setting. At its core is a living world where every NPC gets a name, a past, personality traits, and personal goals. Characters make friends, nurse grudges, take revenge, and even leave their gangs, and their actions reshape the world over time.
The biggest consequence is that the world remembers the player. Someone who gets robbed, wounded, or killed can become a source of vengeance. The victim hunts down the culprit, followed by friends and relatives. A mask to hide your face turns from a cosmetic detail into a practical necessity.
Wounds leave marks, too. An enemy who survives a shootout may end up with scars or a limp. Foes can also be talked to, intimidated, or offered deals.
A separate layer of mechanics covers the struggle for power. Eight factions operate in the world, and each one has:
a leader and a rank system
fighters
money
controlled territory
Leaders pursue their own goals, and new ones step up when old ones fall. Gangs start wars over land, losses, or old scores, and these conflicts can escalate, fizzle out, or end in a truce. While riding around, players may hear gunfire in the hills, stumble onto bodies after a battle, or ride into an ambush.
Players can step in and help one side by taking out its enemies. Factions run camps, hideouts, and supply points, which can be infiltrated to steal cash or burn supplies. Such sabotage weakens a gang and lets rivals seize its land.
Gang officers follow preset plans, and relatives may hold a funeral after one dies. New events also pop up on the road, such as run-ins with enemies, bounty hunters, patrols, and rival gangs. In towns, men with grudges drink in saloons or wander the streets, and any brawl can pull in their friends, family, or fellow gang members.
The mod also expands the ways to gather information. A man can be tied up or intimidated to reveal plans, leader names, or stash locations, though a captive may lie and lead the player into a trap. Good and bad deeds shape how each town views the hero, and the telegraph can be used to send messages, make peace, or threaten an enemy.
Every new playthrough starts with its own backstory. Residents get married, fall ill, land in jail, rob stagecoaches, or die in skirmishes. These events can be read about in the world log and local newspapers.
On top of that, enRage tracks every shot fired. The mod shows the bullet trajectory, along with the bones and organs it passes through. Different ammo types also produce their own effects.
