Director of the new Avengers calls Tom Holland "the last great movie star"

Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo has heaped praise on Spider-Man star Tom Holland. The comments came in a CBR interview about the box office success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where Russo said the actor has a rare kind of screen charm.

"I think Tom Holland translates in a way that I don't know if very few actors in history translate. There is a charm and a genuineness and a warmth to him that really resonates with audiences. And he's so authentic as a person and his performances are so authentic, and he really embodies that character in a way that's straight off the page of the comics."

Russo added that the movie is proof of Holland's star power.

"We've said this before, he's the last great movie star. There's a vintage quality to Tom Holland that feels like it comes from a time that doesn't exist now. There's lots of great movie stars out there, but [his] energy is different. He's got that quality that very, very few people have had."

The Russo brothers directed Holland as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. They also worked with him on Cherry, a drama with no ties to Marvel. Holland isn't currently announced for Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, though that could still change.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18.
