Fallout 4 fan shows sunny screenshot with modern graphics that took several hundred mods and an RTX 5090

The Commonwealth in Fallout 4 was never known for good weather. Leaden skies, a greenish haze, and radiation storms have long been the calling card of postnuclear Boston. Getting a normal, clear day over the ruins, it turns out, means rewriting almost the entire game.

That's exactly what one PC player did. He posted a screenshot of sun-drenched Boston on Reddit, with buildings reflected in the river, and captioned it "Weather aint shit for once". The image looks like the 2015 game got a full remake. The secret came out when people asked him to share his mod load order. The list turned out to be so long that one reader couldn't help but write:

Its the year 2107 and I've finally finished scrolling down the modlist.

The modlist runs to several hundred entries, not counting official DLC and Creation Club packs. Most of it falls into a few big groups:

  • Graphics. FO4 HD Overhaul, reworked LODs for distant objects, Vivid Waters and Vivid Fallout, the Reactor ENB preset, and the NAC X weather mod paired with True Storms.

  • World and NPCs. Unique NPCs changes the look of the locals, Open Commonwealth opens up the Commonwealth, and PRP fixes the precomputed visibility data that keeps heavy mods in downtown Boston from turning into a slideshow.

  • Quests. Sim Settlements 2 with all chapters, Fusion City Rising, Outcasts and Remnants, and No Case Unsolved with new cases for Nick Valentine.

  • Weapons and armor. Dozens of real-world guns from the SCAR-H to the Uzi, a tactical reload system, and the HoloHUD holographic power armor interface.

  • Technical fixes. High FPS Physics Fix, a long loading times fix, and the unofficial community patch.

The hardware is the cherry on top. According to the owner of the modlist, it all runs on an RTX 5090 in a well-ventilated case and delivers more than 70 frames per second in demanding areas. Nvidia Smooth Motion, a driver-level frame generation feature, makes it feel like 120 fps. Crashes still happen, most often on the streets of downtown. Sometimes the game goes down after 20 minutes, and sometimes it holds steady for three hours or more.

Consoles are out of the question, of course. On PS5 and Xbox Series, mods can only be installed through the official Creations service, and on PlayStation they also can't load custom assets. Console owners report crashes with as few as twenty mods. On PC, the barrier to entry is lowered by Mod Organizer 2, which lets players decide whose files take priority, and Wabbajack, which installs ready-made modlists with hundreds of entries in one click.

Someone aptly dubbed the setup "Fallout of Theseus". Nearly everything has been replaced, right down to the sky, and Dogmeat is still by your side.
