Bethesda shuts down viral AI-made Fallout: New York browser game

A fan-made Fallout: New York built with Claude is no more after its creator received a letter from ZeniMax.

The browser game moved Fallout to New York and featured 117 locations, 112 characters, and 46 weapons. The author claimed Claude Opus 5.5 did all of it, with sounds generated through code.

A video of the project racked up around 3.5 million views on social media. The developer said he made no money from the game and hoped Bethesda wouldn't demand its shutdown.

It's completely free, I'm not making a cent off it. I really love Fallout, it's just a fun tech demo.

A few days later, the developer posted the notice he received from ZeniMax and announced the project was shutting down.

How about you make a Fallout game yourselves so I don't have to?

The timing is pretty ironic, since the author had joked shortly before that he could add a quest where the player has to serve someone legal papers, but the target keeps running away.
