David and Lucy from Cyberpunk Edgerunners in Fallout, Mass Effect, Persona, Red Dead Redemption and other universes

The suffix "-punk" stopped being a genre marker a long time ago and turned into a universal aesthetic generator: take any technology, add social inequality, and you're done.

Dieselpunk, atompunk, solarpunk, shibuyapunk – the list grows faster than critics can argue about what even deserves a spot on it. And now someone decided to run a single anime scene through this entire taxonomy.

The reference comes from a meme based on Cyberpunk 2077 and the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, where David promises to take Lucy to the Moon and she responds with a short "David...". An artist posting on Reddit rolled out a remaster of their 15-panel series, replaying that same scene in every conceivable punk subgenre imaginable.

The format stays locked in: line, response, and a complete aesthetic swap covering clothes, fonts, and backgrounds.

The value here isn't the joke itself but the fact that it turned into a genuine visual reference guide. Each panel points to a specific work considered the poster child of its subgenre:

  • Steampunk and dieselpunk skip specifics, just generic Victorian England and the world wars

  • Atompunk goes to Fallout, cattlepunk to Red Dead Redemption 2, raypunk to Star Trek, biopunk to Mass Effect

  • Frostpunk points to the game of the same name by 11 bit studios, decopunk nods to BioShock and its art deco Rapture

  • Magipunk is represented by Arcane, silkpunk by Journey to the West, solarpunk by the novel Project Hail Mary

  • Legopunk turns out indistinguishable from The Lego Movie, and plain punk becomes a mashup of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and the Sk8er Boi music video

The most debatable pick went to biopunk, which landed on Mass Effect with Tali standing in for Lucy. Technically, the BioWare setting doesn't qualify as biopunk, the biotics lore there leans more toward genetics and politics than genre convention. The joke works on another level though: Bio(Ware)punk.
