You won't be able to freely switch between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6 in all story missions – only in some
Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North, told Japanese outlet Famitsu how the character-switching system works between the two protagonists in GTA 6. Depending on the situation, players will either be locked into a specific character, forced to swap to another, or given complete freedom to choose.
GTA 6 features two playable protagonists, Jason and Lucia, whose story Rockstar has shown off in trailers. That setup puts pressure on the developers to build a switching system that doesn't break the narrative while still giving players a sense of control.
Nelson laid out the team's philosophy behind restricting character swaps.
Sometimes [switching characters] is limited by story progression. During the story, there are times where you can't switch from one character for some reason. There are some missions where you are free to switch as much as you want, but there are some sections where we want you to experience it from a certain character's perspective, like GTA 5, so we limit switching.
He pointed to a specific example tied to a mission in a high-rise apartment complex. Players used to be able to freely switch between characters during that segment, but the developers decided to lock control to Jason instead.
There is a mission that takes place in a high-rise apartment complex where you used to be able to switch freely between characters. However, as ex-special forces, we thought it would be a more natural fit for Jason to be in control, so we decided to set the character. The mission is early in the game, so we thought it would be unnatural for Lucia to lead and give instructions as the two navigate the area.
By contrast, Nelson described a mission where switching between Jason and Lucia happens automatically mid-action. He's referring to the trailer sequence where the pair flee by car after robbing a bank. The player starts out controlling Jason, firing at police vehicles from inside the car while Lucia drives, then control shifts to Lucia behind the wheel while Jason and Raul keep shooting from the back seat.
There are some operations where you're forced to switch characters. In the trailer, we showed a mission where they left a bank robbery and drove away in a car. At first you control Jason firing at the police vehicles from inside the car, while Lucia is driving. Then, during the mission you switch characters, and this time the player is driving the car as Lucia, while Jason and Raul continue to fire at the cops from the back seat.
Finally, Nelson described a third type of mission where swapping characters is left entirely up to the player. An example of this also appeared in the trailer, in the final scene where the pair come under attack. "There are missions that are designed in this way, then, like the mission at the end of the trailer where they are under attack, there are times when you can freely alternate switching between Jason and Lucia," Nelson explains.
