Premiere of Lanterns on HBO Max turned out to be more successful than The Penguin and Peacemaker

Lanterns from DC Studios kicked off with strong numbers, beating out other major releases on the platform. Over its first three days on HBO and HBO Max, the series pulled in 9.3 million viewers globally across all platforms and 6.6 million views in the US, per Warner Bros. Discovery.

Only A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms did better, with 6.7 million.

The premiere puts Lanterns among the top five series debuts in HBO Max history. Warner Bros. Discovery also confirmed the debut outperformed several tentpole titles, including IT: Welcome to Derry, The Penguin and True Detective: Night Country. Those shows went on to average 27.1 million, 19.8 million and 17.5 million global viewers respectively.

That comparison sets up a promising trajectory for Lanterns going forward, especially since the premiere episode keeps pulling in steady viewer interest. The first episode has held the No. 1 spot on HBO Max daily Top 10 list since it dropped on Sunday, holding off other new releases on the platform.

The show follows two intergalactic cops, Green Lantern Corps legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). The pair investigate a murder in the American heartland that turns out to be tied to a much bigger, cosmic mystery reaching all the way to Earth itself.

Two episodes are available so far. HBO hasn't ruled out a second season, and Aaron Pierre will reprise his role as Stewart in Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel.
