The upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3 will feature Geralt's canonical weapon from the books for the first time – a silver chain
At Gamescom, CD Projekt Red finally revealed the long-awaited teaser trailer for the Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3. The biggest surprise came from the weapon in Geralt hands – a silver chain, something the witcher hasn't wielded since the opening cinematic of the original Witcher RPG back in 2007.
This detail carries real weight for longtime fans. Silver chains have shown up in exactly one moment across the entire game saga – the prologue of the first Witcher title – along with an appearance in Andrzej Sapkowski's books, where Geralt used one against Adda after she was reborn as a striga. Bringing this weapon back nearly two decades later hints at a possible connection between the new expansion and events from early in the witcher timeline.
Beyond the weapon reveal, the trailer also confirmed another fan theory. Speculation had been building that Songs of the Past might center around Belleteyn, the massive fertility festival that echoes the Celtic Beltane celebration.
The footage backs that theory up: Geralt appears right in the middle of Belleteyn festivities. It marks another notable first for players, since nobody has actually gotten to take part in this kind of celebration within the witcher universe firsthand before, even though it's been referenced in the past.
Songs of the Past isn't the only The Witcher 3 news out of Gamescom, either. CD Projekt Red also showed off gameplay from The Witcher 3 Remastered, showcasing updated visuals, combat tweaks, and a fully reworked skill tree.
