Power connector on the side of MSI gaming laptop makes no sense at all

Laptop design logic should be predictable: bulky cables run to the back of the case so they stay out of the way, and ports you reach for constantly sit far from your actual workspace.

But sometimes an engineering choice looks like whoever laid out the ports never used a mouse with their right hand.

That's the case with an MSI Stealth gaming laptop, whose owner found the power connector sitting on the right side of the case, and nearly dead center at that.

The adapter cable runs right into the space where a mouse would normally sit, and this model uses a proprietary rectangular power brick built for heavy loads. The owner says the adapter tops out at 400 watts, which makes sense given the RTX 4070 chip inside.

The real complaint isn't even which side the port is on, it's where exactly it sits. Most laptops either tuck the charging port into a back corner behind the vents or give the plug a 90-degree bend so the cord immediately routes backward. Here the port sticks out right where you'd naturally want to work a mouse, and there's no way around it without an adapter.

That's where the proprietary connector turns a minor annoyance into a real problem. If this were USB-C, a cheap right-angle adapter – available in plenty of configurations – would fix it instantly, and you'd be able to charge from whichever side suited you.

The owner took it in stride. He'd bought the laptop in a rush during a work trip, and it was the only option with a decent graphics card and a full keyboard with a number pad.

The power cord is a recurring irritation rather than a genuine headache, more of a running joke at this point. MSI got at least one fair defense: port placement rarely makes anyone's checklist before buying a laptop in store.

Left-handed users, for their part, took the news as a small win in a world built for righties.
