Marvel's Wolverine developers did not repeat Spider-Man's mistakes and made only one playable character – Wolverine

Insomniac Games confirmed that Marvel's Wolverine won't feature multiple playable characters. Logan is the only one you'll control throughout the entire story, no exceptions. This became clear after a notable moment with Jean Grey appeared in the trailer released toward the end of July.

The camera pulls back behind her as she enters a dance hall – a technique that usually signals a shift in perspective. Many players took this as a hint that Jean would become playable. Senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed and head of technology Mike Fitzgerald put those expectations to rest, though.

Wolverine is our only playable character. There's definitely the team vibe in that sense. But we were really focusing on Wolverine as a playable character and making sure we nailed that.

This is likely good news for fans of Insomniac previous games. The Mary Jane stealth sections in the Spider-Man series consistently drew criticism – not because they were poorly made, but because they clearly fell short of the core gameplay. Betting on a single hero looks like a smart move here.

Marvel's Wolverine won't be a purely solo story in a vacuum, though. The hands-on demo included large combat sections where Sabretooth and Mystique fought alongside Logan, jumping into combos for team-up finishers. Similar interactions with Jean already appeared in the public gameplay reveal.
