Creators of Supergirl caught using AI for Lobo's design
Supergirl keeps generating controversy even after hitting theaters. This time the drama centers on suspicions that AI was used to create the visual design for Jason Momoa Lobo.
A behind-the-scenes video briefly showed director Craig Gillespie walking Momoa through design options for the character. Those exact concept arts caught the attention of fans, who pointed to telltale visual artifacts and an overall style that made the images look AI-generated.
The backlash online was predictably harsh, especially given that Supergirl carried a budget of roughly 170 million dollars, and Lobo has accumulated hundreds of official visual interpretations across decades of comics. Fans argue the studio clearly had the money to hire an actual concept artist for the job.
James Gunn's own stance adds an extra layer of irony here. The DCU boss previously criticized AI-generated trailers for Superman and said he gives his colleagues in the VFX department "time and the respect they deserve."
That statement now reads a bit differently in light of accusations aimed at his own production. Warner Bros. quickly pulled the video from YouTube, but the move only fueled more discussion.
