Mahershala Ali officially says goodbye to the role of Blade and explains why

Mahershala Ali confirmed that the Blade movie is officially done for him. In an interview with GQ, the actor stated that if Marvel Studios ever does make the film about the famous vampire hunter, it'll happen without him.

Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would've done the movie. So we're not doing the movie. When I look at this and Blade, I couldn't have done both, and the reason this even exists is because that project fell apart and Bassam [Tariq, director who was helming Blade before stepping down in 2022] had the time, space, energy, and focus to go and write this and then re-approach me.

And I was able to use those skills that I had been working on for over a year training for Blade. In that way, I feel creatively redeemed on some level, just in my own journey between me, myself, and I. But I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn't want to do it, so they should answer that question.

In the same interview, Ali talks about his new film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, directed by Bassam Tarik – the same director who left Blade back in 2022.

According to the actor, the collapse of the Blade project actually gave Tarik the time and energy to write a new screenplay.

I don't really want to be known for remakes. I’d love to do original work that resonates with people and impacts them in unique ways.

The year of training Ali put in for the Blade role ended up finding a use after all – the actor admits he feels "creatively rehabilitated" after the whole ordeal.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige admitted last year that the Blade situation caused him personal pain. He said the studio wasn't confident it could bring the script up to the necessary quality during production and didn't want to let Ali down. The screenplay went through three or four rewrites, including two attempts as a historical drama.

The big question now is whether Marvel will recast the role or shelve the reboot idea entirely. Some fans point out that Ryan Gosling is already confirmed as Ghost Rider in the 2028 film, which could hint at the formation of the Midnight Sons – the mystical superhero team where Blade traditionally takes center stage.
