Sony plans to reboot its Spider-Man universe after Kraven, Madame Web, and Morbius failures

Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tom Rothman has confirmed the studio plans to reboot the broader Spider-Man Universe following a string of high-profile flops, including Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and Morbius.

The confirmation came during a conversation with Matt Belloni on The Town podcast, where Rothman answered questions with brief yes-or-no responses. When asked whether the larger Spider-Verse was dead, he simply said "No."

Rothman confirmed Sony would return to those films "at some point," calling it a "fresh reboot" with "new people" – though he offered no further details.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) has had a rough run since launching with Venom in 2018. The Venom trilogy performed reasonably well at the box office, but all three films were critically panned and broadly unpopular with general audiences.

Morbius (2022) fared even worse – it became such a cultural punchline it turned into a meme – and was followed by similar disasters in Madame Web (2024) and Kraven the Hunter (2024).

Outgoing Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra called Kraven the Hunter "probably the worst launch we had in the seven-and-a-half years" of his tenure, while also blaming the press for criticizing the films.

What the reboot will actually look like remains unclear, and whatever form it takes will likely be years away. In the meantime, the regular Spider-Man still has a theatrical outing coming up – Brand New Day hits cinemas on July 31.
