FBI arrests a member of the ShinyHunters hacker group that hacked GTA 6
The FBI has confirmed the arrest of "one of the alleged leaders" of the hacking group ShinyHunters. The group claimed responsibility for the hack of Rockstar Games in April 2026.
As reported by Reuters, Dutch police announced this week that they had detained a 24-year-old man from Amsterdam. FBI cyber division assistant director Brett Leatherman called the suspect "one of the alleged leaders of ShinyHunters" and shared figures on the scale of the group's activity.
Since last year, this cybercriminal and his co-conspirators have allegedly breached more than 140 organizations and taken at least $70 million in extortion payments.
Rockstar Games is reportedly among the victims. ShinyHunters claimed the attack in April, and Rockstar responded with an official statement.
We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This incident has no impact on our organization or our players.
The breach is unrelated to the September 2022 GTA 6 leak and the Cyberleek leaks that surfaced in August. It did seemingly expose alleged financial records, including the apparent weekly revenue of GTA Online.
More recently, ShinyHunters claimed to have stolen information from the FBI itself. According to Reuters and the BBC, the data allegedly includes details on most of the agency's agents, and the claim came after the 24-year-old suspect was arrested.
Leatherman also addressed the remaining members of the group directly, urging them to come forward.
You've heard about the arrest of your colleague. We're confident you've seen or heard things in recent days that the public has not. Other groups believed anonymity, or their friends, would protect them, and they were wrong.
In May, it also emerged that ShinyHunters breached the education platform Canvas and stole data on 280 million teachers and students.
