AI GPT-6 Astra created a three-dimensional world inspired by six paintings by Vincent van Gogh

Developer Peter Gostev built a walkable 3D world based on Van Gogh paintings and made it publicly available. According to him, GPT-6 Astra (Max) delivered a working result on the first try. He also published the full prompt.

It is pretty magical – turning 6 paintings by Van Gogh into a single walkable town, I love this.

The idea behind the project is to avoid building a gallery of separate scenes with a level-select menu, and instead assemble one continuous geography out of the real paintings. The experience starts inside "The Bedroom" in Arles, then a door leads out onto "Cafe Terrace at Night", the street descends toward the embankment from "Starry Night Over the Rhone", and the town gate opens onto "Wheatfield with Crows" alongside a field of sunflowers.

The mechanics of moving between zones get special attention too. Each painting has its own palette and stroke rhythm, and crossing a threshold triggers a two-to-three-second transformation where strokes stream and recolor around the camera.

Inside each zone, a faint golden shimmer marks the exact spot on the ground where the world lines up into the precise composition of the original canvas – five perfect paintings hidden inside one town.
