12 minutes of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 remake gameplay in 4K
Ubisoft released an extended 4K gameplay demonstration of Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake following the announcement at Gamescom Opening Night Live.
The footage shows adventure map exploration, resource gathering, town development, creature recruitment, and tactical combat.
Ubisoft studios in Chengdu and Shanghai are handling development, with support from teams in Paris and Montpellier. Release is planned for 2027.
The biggest change from the 1999 original comes down to presentation. The fixed 2D isometric view has been replaced with a fully 3D world and a free camera, and the entire game was rebuilt from scratch on the Snowdrop engine. The underlying structure stays the same, though, including combat on a hexagonal grid.
The visual side picked up a set of modern technologies:
4K resolution
dynamic lighting
real-time weather
seasonal changes on maps
The remake includes the original game along with both expansions, Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death, plus all nine factions and their campaigns. The story has been reworked into a single continuous narrative, with a new introductory campaign prologue for newcomers and additional cutscenes.
The main storyline remains untouched. Queen Catherine tries to restore order in Erathia after her father is murdered and hostile factions invade.
Ubisoft also mentioned quality-of-life improvements, including new planning and decision-making tools, though the studio hasn't shared specific examples yet.
Multiplayer supports up to eight players. The online mode has been reworked with improved matchmaking and a simultaneous turns system, while local Hot Seat returns unchanged.
Ubisoft is also paying close attention to user-generated content. The remake stays compatible with the thousands of maps and campaigns the community has created over 25 years, and it comes with updated editor tools. A new in-game section will let players search for, download, and share community creations.
Audio has been rebuilt from the ground up. The updated sound system includes voice acting, layered music tracks, ambient effects, and new audio cues tied to specific actions – combat, spellcasting, morale changes among units, and map traversal.
Community reaction to the first trailer has been mixed, with some comments under the video turning openly skeptical. Part of the audience compares the remake to the 2015 HD edition, which shipped without either expansion due to source code limitations. That issue doesn't apply here since the game was built from the ground up.
Ubisoft continues to support Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era from Unfrozen alongside the remake. That game has been in early access since April 30, 2026, and serves as a prequel set 500 years before the events of the classic series.
