Minimalist Arise Dark Lord combines strategy and action in the spirit of Tolkien

Introversion Software has announced Arise Dark Lord, a hybrid game that mixes action, real-time strategy, tower defense, and base building.

Players take control of a Dark Lord and raise an army of the undead to wipe out humanity. That's a lot to take on, and the game backs it up with plenty of mechanics.

Control works directly through the Dark Lord character, who moves around the world while the player uses the mouse to direct groups of raised undead toward enemies. Over time, players can collect relics that boost their sorcery and let them revive fallen opponents to add to their ranks.

This snowballing army mechanic feels familiar to anyone who's played classic strategy games, where your forces build momentum on their own.

The visual style stands out the most. Most of the action plays out on a world map styled after the illustrative maps found in Tolkien books and similar fantasy settings.

Your own dark stronghold, topped with a menacing tower, acts as the main base and needs defending with turrets, barricades, and cursed traps.

Defense isn't the only option, though – there's also an offensive side to the game, letting you invade enemy territory and lay waste to their settlements. The description also mentions some form of resource management, though Introversion Software hasn't shared details yet. It's reasonable to guess these resources tie into your undead army and determine what you're able to build.

The full release is set for 2027.
