Diablo 2: Resurrected surpasses Diablo 4 in Steam player count proving series longevity

Diablo 2: Resurrected launched on Steam on February 11 alongside the Reign of the Warlock expansion – the first major content addition for the game in 25 years. Within just a few days, the remastered classic action-RPG managed to surpass the fourth installment in daily peak player count.

According to Steam DB data, the 24-hour peak for Diablo 2: Resurrected reached 11,749 players, while Diablo 4 hit 11,047. The all-time record for the fourth game remains significantly higher at 55,561 players, but that was set 16 months ago. For the Diablo 2 remaster, the current peak simultaneously became its all-time Steam high.

Several factors explain this situation. Diablo 4 is in the middle of its twelfth season, which most players have already completed, and the new Lord of Hatred expansion with the paladin and warlock classes won't arrive until April. Meanwhile, Diablo 2 received fresh content and finally broke free from Battle.net exclusivity – many fans had been waiting years for the opportunity to purchase the game on Steam.

The Reign of the Warlock expansion introduced the warlock class, capable of summoning demons, consuming them for buffs, or binding them to access unique abilities. Beyond that, the update brought expanded Terror Zones, a new boss – the Colossal Ancients, loot filters, improved stash tabs, and Steam achievements. The game also received Steam Deck Verified status, which appeals to players who prefer portable PC gaming.

The news sparked lively community discussions. As one fan writes – Diablo 2 will go down in history as the greatest game in the genre, so losing to it is no shame. Others note that the remaster paradoxically feels fresher than the fourth installment, with graphics that actually look better. However, some players rightly point out that comparing daily peaks during different lifecycle periods isn't entirely fair. A clearer picture will emerge in a couple of months.
