New Fable still hasn't shown demon doors from the original trilogy
Playground Games' Fable reboot promises to return the series to its roots while preserving key franchise features. During a recent livestream, developers showcased the most detailed gameplay so far and emphasized they're creating a proper Fable game with all its traditions. However, some classic elements have already been officially cut, including the dog companion and character appearance changes based on moral decisions. Yet another iconic series mechanic hasn't appeared in any footage yet – demon doors.
Reddit user gex109 expressed concern:
I really miss this guy. I hope they keep them in the new Fable.
Indeed, these mysterious gates with faces haven't appeared in any published footage. That said, Playground hasn't shown quests in detail yet, and demon door requirements often represented small side missions, so the studio might be deliberately keeping this element under wraps.
Another fan noted:
I think there's basically a zero percent chance that the game won't have them, given how quintessentially Fable they are. I imagine the reason they aren't showcased yet is because they want to keep them a surprise.
Many in the community share this view and believe the game would suffer greatly without this mechanic.
However, the absence of doors could have positive aspects. The new Fable is moving away from black-and-white morality toward a more nuanced approach. In such a system, demon door requirements – like needing to marry a random character or kill an innocent to open the gates – might conflict with players' desire to roleplay specific characters.
Fable launches this fall on PC, Xbox Series, and PS5.
