Baldur's Gate 3 director's secret puzzle solved by Divinity fans
Fans of the Divinity series appear to have cracked a puzzle that Larian Studios head Swen Vincke posed to the community. While the studio hasn't officially confirmed the answer, a new easter egg definitely appeared in the trailer for a reason.
Last week, ahead of a major Divinity Q&A session on Reddit, Baldur's Gate 3 director Vincke challenged content creator WolfheartFPS.
If you can figure out my profile banner, Wolfheart, I'll allow one special question.
The banner showed a bright red image with a wavy green-yellow stripe running through the middle.
Players quickly identified it as a spectrogram – a visual representation of sound. Theories started flooding in: some attempted to convert the image back into audio, others tried guessing what sounds might be encoded. One popular theory suggested it was Larian's old jingle melody.
However, no answer satisfied Vincke before the AMA began, where he was directly asked about the puzzle.
I thought this would be easy to find. Perhaps a close look at the high-quality version of the trailer will help.
Within hours, someone finally found the answer. Larian's director of publishing Michael Douse also received a question about the riddle:
Since we didn't solve it in time, what was up with the spectrogram?
To which he replied:
As far as I know, someone figured it out.
So what was it? Larian never handed anyone the metaphorical gold medal, but after Vincke's trailer hint, serious detective work began. On Reddit, one user asked:
Is it the monolith at 2:28?
They attached their own screenshot of the spectrogram from the Divinity trailer audio, showing that during a brief moment of silence, a Hellstone pattern was visible. Comparing it to Vincke's image revealed that the director had shared a fragment immediately following this easter egg.
On Reddit, some are speculating about possible hidden meanings.
Hellstone in the trailer spectrogram at 2:28 from Swen tweet. Something will happen on the 28th of February? Release on 2028 February?
It's hard to believe the Hellstone easter egg isn't the answer Vincke was looking for, but whether it contains additional hints or surprises remains another question entirely. The community will undoubtedly be checking spectrograms of every future Larian trailer for new secrets.
