Battles with hundreds of enemies and the harsh fate of rome's legendary warriors in the trailer for pixel strategy game The Ninth Legion

Indie Games Hub has unveiled a trailer for The Ninth Legion, a narrative-driven RTS set during the final campaign of Rome's Legio IX Hispana.

The legion is among the most enigmatic units in the Roman army. Historical records of its fate break off after the march into the northern lands, and its disappearance has been debated by historians for centuries.

Gameplay is built around the idea of a living, changing army. The player's legion evolves as it pushes deeper into hostile northern territory, while soldiers form relationships, friendships, and rivalries. Over the course of the campaign, each cohort builds its own history within the unit, which directly affects its combat effectiveness.

Losing a close companion shakes the troops – a cohort loses cohesion if someone important to its soldiers dies. Weather in The Ninth Legion is more than background decoration too, as it affects morale and combat stats during battle. Veterans can calm and boost the morale of their neighbors in the line if they are kept alive through the campaign, so players will need to think carefully about how each cohort is positioned to maximize its impact and chances of survival.

The Steam page highlights several key systems that shape the gameplay:

  • Formations. The player's army represents Rome's strength, cohesion, and discipline, and countering different threats means switching between various battle formations.

  • Rest and train. After each major battle, the legion makes camp. There, relationships between soldiers develop, health recovers, the fallen are honored, new Centurions are promoted, and provisions are restocked – these choices set the legion's path and the morale of its men.

  • An evolving battlefield. Fire, weather, and terrain actively work against the legion in combat, and the land itself changes as the campaign goes on, pushing players to turn the elements to their advantage.

The developers put extra focus on the emotional side of the campaign. Soldiers aren't faceless units but part of a social fabric that frays with losses and strengthens under good command. That approach puts The Ninth Legion alongside narrative strategy games where every soldier's fate matters to the story of the whole unit.

The Ninth Legion is planned for release in December 2026 on PC via Steam.
