Valve saved the current build of Half-Life: Alyx to a separate branch, and the community is already building theories

A new Steam branch for Half-Life: Alyx called "previous_release" has shown up. Valve locked down the current version of the game separately, which usually happens before major changes hit the main build.

The most likely explanation involves engine tinkering or prep work for the Steam Frame VR headset. Any major update risks breaking existing mods, so keeping a stable version tucked away in its own branch looks like a reasonable precaution on Valve's part.

Still, there's a more interesting precedent worth mentioning. Valve pulled a similar move with Portal back in the day: what looked like minor technical tweaks turned out to be cover for an ARG that announced Portal 2.

Fans immediately latched onto that memory and started speculating.

Half-Life: Alyx launched in 2020 as a VR exclusive and still stands as the biggest entry in the series in recent years. Its audience is noticeably smaller than traditional Half-Life releases, largely because VR hardware remains a barrier for many players. That means any changes to the game get scrutinized instantly by fans who've been waiting years for a hint of Half-Life 3.

Valve hasn't commented on the new branch yet. So the question stays open – is this just routine maintenance, or is Valve cooking up another surprise disguised as a modest update?
