Robert Kirkman promises Invincible season 4 will finally give fans what they've been waiting for

After three seasons of steadily escalating threats – from Earth, to the universe, to the multiverse – Invincible is somehow raising the stakes again. Season 4's central villain is Thragg, Grand Regent of the Viltrum Empire, a threat so overwhelming that Omni-Man starts to look like a warm-up act by comparison.

Lee Pace, known to superhero fans as Ronan the Accuser from the MCU, voices Thragg. Co-showrunners Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa admitted there was never really any other candidate for the role.

"Lee Pace is just the greatest. We couldn't think of another actor to play Thragg. He was our first choice, only choice, and we couldn't be more thrilled that he was able to come in and do it."

The Viltrumite storyline has been quietly threading through all three previous seasons, but deliberately kept in the background. After Omni-Man left Earth at the end of season 1, the threat of a Viltrum invasion technically loomed over the show without ever becoming the main event.

Kirkman framed it as a conscious choice:

"The focus was establishing Mark and building Mark as a character and showing what's going on on Earth. But this season is different."

Conquest's appearance in the season 3 finale served as a sharp reminder of just how dangerous the Viltrumites actually are – that's when the threat stopped feeling abstract. Now, according to Racioppa, the show is ready to make good on what it's been teasing all along.

"You've seen little bits of the Viltrumites. You've met a couple of them, but we've also been like, 'They're coming. They're coming.' So, finally, we deliver on that promise."

For fans who've spent seasons asking for more Omni-Man, more Coalition of Planets, and more Allen the Alien, season 4 is being positioned as the payoff they've been waiting for.

Invincible season 4 premieres March 18 on Prime Video.
